Description: The Rottweiler is a medium-large, robust, powerful dog. His build denotes great strength, agility and endurance. The Rottweiler is a working dog, he is the happiest when there is a job to do whether it is herding, competing in obedience, tracking, search and rescue or retrieving the newspaper. He is an effective guard dog, but needs firm handling and proper training. A Rottweiler will defend his family and property to the end, but he does have a tendency to become loyal to one person. An inexperienced owner should not consider this breed.

History: Known in Europe as the Rottweiler Metzgerhund, he was named after the town of Rottweil. Believed to have come from the Mastiff or the German Shepherd Dog. he was originally bred to control livestock. During the First World War the Rottweiler proved himself to be an intelligent police and guard dog.

Character: This breed is brave, very loyal, obedient, protective, watchful, and strong. It will risk life and limb to defend its family.

Temperament: The Rottweiler is known to have a dominant temperament. However, if properly socialized, a Rottweiler makes a good playmate for children and gets along well with cats and other household animals. This is all contingent on whether the dog has had positive experiences with them when young, however.

Care: When it is shedding, use a rubber glove to remove dead hairs. The ears must be kept clean, and the claws must be kept short. Grooming may be done once a week.

Training: A Rottweiler's dominant nature makes it necessary that its trainer is calm, consistent and fair. This breed requires strict training.

Activity: This dog needs plenty of exercise. Let it run in the open country or the woods, as it does not wish to wander far from its family. Rottweilers also love to swim or catch a ball. Rottweielrs must be given at elast 35 minutes of outdoor exercise a day.
